The origin of the colored ribbon may have been the George Norton Song, ';'Round Her Neck She Wears a Yeller Ribbon.'; This became a WWI song of waiting for a distant love:
'Round her neck she wears a yeller ribbon,
She wears it in winter and the summer so they say,
If you ask her ';Why the decoration?';
She'll say ';It's fur my lover who is fur, fur away.
Tony Orlando picked up this image in his song ';Tie a Yellow Ribbon.';
The Orlando song came out a few years before the taking of the American hostages by the Iranians. Almost spontaneously people began tying yellow ribbons around trees to signal, as in the song, that they were waiting for the hostages to return (the song talks about the loved one returning, but not a hostage).
Eventually the yellow ribbon became a symbol of support for Americans in harm's way abroad.
The red AIDS ribbon may have been the second colored ribbon used to think of loved ones who are in harm's way.
Eventually when other groups and organizations looked for symbols, the ribbon came to mind.Who starts ribbon awareness campaign? how many types or patterns of ribbons in this world?
there are almost 20 ribbons. each is started by an individual organization that adopts that particular color...there are certain colors that have been adopted by several different organizations. i am including a link to the list i found online
